Sensitive Sam - a great SPD book for kids!

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Sensitive Sam written by Marla Roth-Fisch is an engaging look at how Sam feels and interprets the world. This is a great book for little kiddos trying to understand why they feel “different” and also good for older kids to grasp sensory processing issues. The author explores many sensory situations including school - which we all know is a biggie with our kiddos. Occupational Therapy is introduced and Sam and his parents learn how to help Sam feel better and more comfortable.

This is an amazing resource for any family. Parents will benefit as well. Specially if you’re overwhelmed and having a hard time understanding how your child might be feeling. Why they’re clothes are irritating them, why they’re having negative behaviours.

The pictures are colorful and fun. You’ll love Sam! I bought my copy on Amazon, but it’s also on the Future Horizon’s website www.fhautism.com.

Gluten Free App for Iphone, Itouch, etc.

Monday, August 17th, 2009

It’s the end of summer and the kids are all going back to school or homeschooling is back in session.  I hope you all enjoyed at least a few relaxing days with your families.

Some fun and helpful news in the tech world is a new app for your iphone or itouch “Is that Gluten Free?”gluten-free-app-photo

FEATURES

- Over 13,500 VERIFIED Gluten-Free Products
- Over 300 Brands, including Private Label Grocery Store Brands
- Search by Category, Brand or Product Name
- Frequent, FREE Updates with New Products and Brands
- Searchable Ingredients Tab designating Safe, Unsafe and Possibly Unsafe Ingredients
- Handy Alphabetical Index for Categories, Brands and Ingredients
- One-touch link to the company’s website allowing you to search for more information

As someone fairly new to the Gluten Free world this can be a very helpful tool.  Navigating through the grocery store and at restaurants has become quite the task and I for one will take any help I can get.

I’d love to hear from anyone who has brands or recipes they recommend.  We’ve got to the extreme in my house - GF/CF, dairy free and soy free - so we’re basically eating meats, fruits and vegetables.   I thought trying the diet was going to be excruciating for my child addicted to pizza and French fries and milk, but after the first week it’s been smooth sailing.  There are a plethora of amazing products to choose from and we’ve been going through trial and error.

I’ve found giving my son a reward for his healthy eating does wonders in motivating his healthy eating.  Two treats he loves are Peanut Butter & Co’s “White Chocolate Peanut Butter,” which is sweetened with agave and is all natural, and Purely Decadent made with coconut milk non-dairy frozen dessert.  I know, that’s a mouthful, but it’s yummy and fabulous.

If you check out the “Is that Gluten Free?” app, be sure and let us know what you think.
